It’s often used to treat conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate, but many people use it for a number of other conditions, such as:
- Chronic bronchitis
- Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
- Colds and coughs
- Migraine headaches
- Prostate cancer
- Prostate infections
- Sore throat
Saw palmetto is also used as a diuretic and to promote relaxation, and some people use it as an aphrodisiac.
Varieties of Saw Palmetto Supplements
Capsules containing saw palmetto are available in vegetarian-friendly formulas; they’re also available as softgels.
In many cases, saw palmetto is helpful when used in conjunction with conventional prescription medications. However, as with all supplements, you need to ensure that you’re not taking other medications that this supplement could interrupt. Some research suggests that you should avoid taking saw palmetto if you are taking contraceptives, estrogens and anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs.
